Lucy’s Living Room | | What Ava Living designer Pamela Sandall has to say about member Lucy Siv’s room. |

Designer's Critique: What works and what doesn't in your room. |
 | The personality projected by your room makes it down-to-earth. The mood it creates is casual and comfortable. | |
|
| Hi Lucy,
I know exactly what you mean! I have a similar family room in my new home and it has the same "brown" personality. The good news is you've some good starting pieces, you just need to flesh it out a bit.
A couple of initial impressions:
The painting over the sofa is MUCH too small. It also appears to have a pink subject matter. Nothing wrong with pink - it's my favorite, but as the only pink in the room, it looks lonely. It looks like you have a touch of orange as well. You need some accessories, some smaller pieces and some "love" on your fireplace.
The room overall could use a bit of bold pattern and an accent color or two. This can be a fun field trip for you by visisting a fabric store and find something that strikes you OR you might want to shop for a larger art piece first and pull colors in accessories out of that piece.
By love, I mean a mantle, tile, paint..something to give it a bit of style. Molding purchased affordably from Home Depot/Lowes can be assembled to form a substantion mantle for not much money.
Large art over the fireplace can be from a store like Home Goods or higher end if that is your desire. You could also use custom art. I will include you in my newsletter that I sent out this morning. There is a link for some affordable art.
The drapery looks a bit "fussy" or victorian for the large sofas. If you want to keep them, I would advise the addition of a separate solid or bold panel as a secondary treatment, keeping the airier drapes for added texture. Depeding on your final pallette, the wall niche around your window (slider?) could be painted in a contrasting color. The color need not be an actual color, but more a richening of thte neutral in the rest of the space...again depending on the other colors in the space.
Finally, I would suggest an area rug! It would help to ground the seating area.
I will set up a Pinterest page for you if you like with some suggestions?? My pinterest account is: www.pinterest.com/pamelasandall.
I have done this for a couple of other Avaliving clients and they have found it quite useful. Let me know if that's okay with you!
Best Regards,
Pam |
