Your room's personality is down-to-earth.  The mood it projects is casual.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for choosing me to review your room.

To improve the balance of the room we need to bring the heaviness up from the bottom of the room. Because the contrast is so high between the walls and the furniture our eye falls to the dark leather furniture which all sits low in the room. In other words, we need to soften the contrast between the walls and the furniture. You can do this by adding a nice neutral to the walls - cream is too light. I also would not choose dark carpeting as it will make the room feel heavier.
The way to improve the rhythm is to help direct our eye around the room by adding some color higher up. Draperies and lamps will fix this quickly. Draperies will also help create an emphasis on the back wall by establishing it as the focal point of the room. A quick fix would be to lower the artwork you have so that the bottom of the artwork is about 8-10 inches above the sofa.

You definitely need lighting. I would eliminate the floor lamp. It is too contemporary and doesn't provide the right lighting for the room. Table lamps at reading height will provide both functional task light and help with the unity of the room. Other accessories will help the overall harmony of the room also. A coffee table would be great to link the furniture pieces. You could consider an upholstered ottoman if you want to make it kid friendly.
As far as style goes, you need to think transitional. The leather furniture is too contemporary to be considered traditional. Keep your lamps, artwork, and rug selection clean line and stylized rather than too traditional. That being said, you don't need to stay modern...just not too traditional.

I hope these suggestions help. I'd love the opportunity to work more specifically on your room. If you are interested consider one of the more detailed design options l offer.

Good Luck!
Angie
