Designer's Critique: What works and what doesn't in your room. |
 | Your room reflects a unique personality that's down-to-earth. The mood it engenders is comfortable, cozy, and unpretentious. | |
|
| Hi Susan;
You've done a nice job of making the room feel comfortable and casual for your family, and I think with a bit of tweaking it will feel even better.
First, I think upon walking into the room your focus is split between the painting and the TV. You need to re-locate (possibly to another room, since it looks like you don't have much wall space in that room)the painting and center the TV, then put the small armchair where the TV is currently, angled toward the three seater couch which will make it seem included in the conversation circle.
Second, I think if you could possibly replace the love seat with two comfortable armchairs, one angled at a 45 degree angle to the side table beside the sofa (which will have to be moved back toward the window to make room for the chair)and the other one in the opposit corner of the room with a really small side table (just big enough to put down a drink), you wouldn't have such a solid obstruction when you walk in the room as you do now with the back of the love seat facing the entrance. Be careful of the scale of the arm chairs, though. They should be comfortable, but not oversized or you'll just overcrowd the room again.
Having two arm chairs instead of the love seat will also make the coffee table a better proportion for the room. If you are not able to replace the loveseat with 2 chairs, you might consider replacing the coffee table for a square one. Right now, it's not the right shape for the couch & love seat. It seems to leave the love seat out of the group.
In terms of color, I like the green you've chosen for your walls. It's hard to tell the colors of your other furniture from the photos, but from what I can see, there doesn't seem to be anything else referencing the wall color in the furniture (on my computer your love seat looks sort of blue and the sofa looks grey). If you could change your toss cushions to bring in that color, add a throw combining that green and some of the sandy colors you have going on in the room, it will make the wall color more included in the decor. Also, I can't really tell what's covering your large window, but hanging side panels in the same fabric as one or two of the toss cushions that brings in the wall color, would be another way to bring more unity to the color scheme.
The small corner shelf that you have on the wall at the end of the room on the left would be better grouped with the small art pieces on the right. it's too small on its own and looks stranded by itself in the corner. This will work if you center the TV.
I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Robin Siegerman
