I do agree that your current kitchen state-of-affairs is pretty "blah!" The room is well balanced, and offers a nice workspace layout in the space you have. Your furniture appears to be well-proportioned for the room, as well. I think the room does lack emphasis in the form of a focal point. The focal point in your kitchen is most likely the patio door; you have a nice start with the window treatment, but adding even more to that wall, whether in the form of color, accessories or a new drapery, could go a long way to adding emphasis to your kitchen.
I really like the window treatment on your kitchen window, as well. It creates a nice rhythm and harmony in the space, by repeating the colors in your patio door drapery panels, as well as the artwork and rug.
Where the room falls apart slightly is in the lack of color and warmth overall. Neutral floors, countertops and nearly white walls create a cold, stark space without the infusion of warmth you are probably looking for. Keeping major elements of a room neutral is often a great idea - especially when you know you will have them for years to come! Neutral countertops and floors are just the ticket, as they allow you to change your color scheme in the years to come, without a complete kitchen remodeling project. However, wall color is an easy (and inexpensive) way to completely transform your space. By using a deeper neutral tone, even a gold or earthy green, you will add warmth to the kitchen on a very small budget.
