Designer's Critique:  What works and what doesn't in your room.

  Needs Improvement       Good        Fantastic

 Balance

 Proportion & Scale

A harmonious or satisfying arrangement and proportion of the components of the room. Balance gives a sense of repose and a feeling of completion. A well-balanced room gives careful consideration to the placement of objects. Line, form, color and texture all help determine an object’s visual weight, which is the amount of space it appears to occupy.   How well does this room achieve balance?

Elements of space design are harmoniously arranged by shape, style and color. Size relationships in a room are defined by proportion and scale. Proportion refers to how the elements within a room relate to each other. Scale relates to the size of an object when compared with the size of the space in which it is located.    How well is proportion and scale achieved in this room?

Your room appears to be eclectic.  The mood it strikes is comfortable and warm.

Emphasis

Harmony & Unity

The focal point should be obvious as you enter the room; it is the area to which your eye is attracted. As the center of interest – a fireplace, artwork or a window treatment framing a beautiful view – must be sufficiently emphasized so that everything else leads the eye toward the featured area.  How clear is the emphasis of this room?

A well-designed room that encompasses all the other elements and principles of design as a unified whole. There is a consistency of sizes and shapes, a harmony of color and pattern as well as a sense of order.    How well does this room display harmony and unity?

Rhythm

Rhythm helps the eye move easily from one object to another and creates a sense of harmony that tells the eye everything in the room relates to a unified whole.   How well does this room provide a rhythm?

Thank you for the room review request. You have a nice space to work with and the golden tones on your walls and the granite counters are nice warm colors. I looked over your inspiration photos, so I think that I have a good idea of the direction that you are wanting to go in. The roman nose tiles should work well with it.

From looking at your inspiration photos, I see warm, sophisticated spaces that I call "countrypolitan". A mix of textures, worn woods, natural colors and very inviting. You mentioned a couple of things that you wish to make changes to so I would like to address those as well as a couple of other suggestions that I think will help you acquire the look you are wanting,

First of all, I would recommend that you treat the island as a separate unit from the other cabinetry... much like your inspiration photo. Right now all the white tends to give more of a cottage-y feeling. There are a couple of different ways that you could accomplish this. I would suggest that you have the three plain sides of the island surfaced with wood, with a rich stain and have the cabinetry side of the island painted to match. I did this recently on a project where I had the painters repaint the cabinetry in a rich color with a faux wood grain and it looked quite nice.

Secondly, you should have some pendant lights installed above the island. This would not be difficult to have wired by an electrician. I love the large scale light fixtures in your inspiration photo. However, in your case... you need a new light fixture over the table, and that is the one that should be larger in scale. So do some pendants over the island that are smaller in scale so as not to compete with the table light fixture.

Speaking of table... I think you should go with a round shape for this space. A pedestal base in an urn shape would be nice in a rich wood tone. I would then add some comfortable upholstered chairs... perhaps with slip covers. If you would like to see some actual recommendations, I would be glad to take it to the next level to work with you on that.

The windows could use a nice full drape,,, again, similar to your inspiration photo. The smaller window could use a soft roman shade to tie in with the drapes.

As far as your accessories... go for fewer accessories that are larger in scale. The pieces over the windows are not working for me; and besides, they will interfere with the placement of your drapery rods. Maybe group them over with the wall mounted fruit basket. The horizontal decorative piece above the plate rack would work better over the doorway next to the refrigerator. Then... if you want to do a plate collection... really fill that wall with plates and platters to make a bigger statement. Additionally, if you ever upgrade your refrigerator, try and get one that is counter depth and taller.

I hope I was helpful and clear in my suggestions. I would be glad to work with you further. Please keep me updated with your progress!

Regards, Terri
