Project: The Museum of Costume and Fashion
"I want my apartment to look like a garden - a garden in hell!" Remarked Diana Vreeland to Billy Baldwin who in the early 1960’s designed Mrs. Vreeland’s home, a potluck of floral patterns and varying shades of her favorite color, red. This interior, a literal scrapbook of mementos from trips abroad still resonates today, and upon seeing photographs of it in high school, I knew I wanted to create spaces just as inviting and intriguing.
Many years later Mrs. Vreeland would appear again, this time while researching for my senior thesis project at The New York School of Interior Design. My project, ‘The Museum of Costume and Fashion’, provides a gracious sized facility for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ever expanding Costume Institute. While this new space includes a visible storage facility for 1/3 of the collection, visible artist studios, and classrooms, at the same time discusses decorative and structural similarities between fashion and architecture. For instance, in each gallery of the permanent collection repurposed scaffolding systems are used to create display cases for garments, evoking a skirt’s crinoline.
Sustainability was a guiding factor in selecting materials, furnishings and designing the overall interior. I’ve used a green wall to help reduce heating and cooling that additionally helps to provide filtered air to the collection, thus lengthening its lifespan. A prefabricated paneling system used on the façade further reduces solar heat gain, while a cluster of older structures on the site have been preserved and incorporated into the new structure.
This project truly reflects the skills I’ve acquired, not only in my knowledge of sustainable materials and systems, but in renderings that combine watercolor techniques with perspectives built in Autocad 3-D. Mrs. Vreeland and her interiors are still very much an inspiration, however this project has led me to pursue a career in designing institutional and contract interiors.
